GALLERY ETHER is elated in announcing The MacArthurs are looking for a fuckin’ bassist, the debut solo-exhibition of Fukuoka-based multimedia artist Shota Aoki, to be held June 7th through June 28th, 2025.

With The MacArthurs are looking for a fuckin’ bassist, Fukuoka-based multimedia artist Shota Aoki debuts his first full-scale solo-exhibition. Featuring multiple installation works and over 100 original paintings, the exhibition stands as a solo continuance of the passion and activities of the artist’s early punk band The MacArthurs, who took their name with an ironic connotation from the American general responsible for overseeing the post World War II occupation of Japan, Douglas MacArthur. The artist, seeing MacArthur as a kind of father figure for modern Japan who protected the position of the emperor and influenced the nation’s constitution, looks to create works that will similarly resonate and take new form through time. Each piece is like a song, teetering between youthful hopes and angst, with its own melody that carries the artist and viewer alike to a different place and time.

“I've always loved drawing. When I was little, I saw images of riots on TV. In order to subdue the mob, the riot police raised their batons and threw Molotov cocktails and stones at them. I imitated that and played "riot games" in my neighborhood, and once I got hit in the head with a big rock and got covered in blood. I was 6 years old. After that, even after the injury healed, I remember returning to the place to look for the rock that hit my head and making sure there was blood on it. The blood faded day by day...”
